Why did I become a Registered Dietitian?

I didn't become a Dietitian because nutrition came naturally to me.
In fact, I became a Dietitian because I struggled with my weight for most of my life.

I tried almost every fad, trend, and hack, all to end up in the same spot a few weeks later.
In hindsight, I think I made almost as many mistakes as someone can make when trying to lose weight.

This frustration influenced me to begin studying nutrition, initially for myself.
And this worked.
As I completed my Bachelor's in Food & Nutrition and my Master's in Dietetics, I applied what I was learning and lost nearly 30 pounds.
What began as a personal effort to understand the science behind my own weight turned into a professional calling.

Why did I choose to specialize in diabetes?
Admittedly, I have never had Prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes.
But I deeply understand the lifestyle changes that drive it, because I have personally lived it.

Evidence-based Medical Nutrition Therapy consistently shows that the strongest levers for improving and, in many cases, putting Type 2 diabetes into remission, are lifestyle factors like:

-
Nutrition
-
Exercise
-
Weight Loss
-
Stress Reduction
-
Proper Sleep

Just because blood sugar management may seem straightforward, it is anything but easy.
In my own life, I would get motivated and completely change my lifestyle.
I would go to the gym 4-5x a week, eat 'clean', and get 10,000 steps a day... and this was great, until the motivation waned and I would slowly, but surely, stop going to the gym, eating "clean", and getting enough steps in per day.

I would rinse and repeat this frustrating cycle for years.
This frustration eventually led me to research and study the psychology behind behavior change through books such as:

-
The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
-
Atomic Habits by James Clear
-
Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg
I finally began losing weight once I discovered how habits were formed.

This was a blessing in disguise as I share what I learned with my patients.
